Third place

A colleague just stopped by with a medal for me for placing third in my age group in my second 5k. Of course, there were only three people in my age group. And I was far behind the other two.

Ahem.

Whew!

Everyone is finally healthy again. Hooray!

So now we return to normal levels of chaos. Thanks to completely non-overlapping fall break schedules for the college and the local school district, this is our childcare schedule for the next three days.

Now all we have to do is figure out how to squeeze in research time for Bill and classes, advising meetings with 16 students, and four hours of committee meetings for me. No problem.

In the meantime, we're celebrating another turning point. Today Owen had his 6-year 'well check'. Not only was he ON the growth chart, but -- tipping the scales at a whopping 40 pounds -- he hit the 15th percentile! We haven't seen numbers like these since he was 12 months old and began to slip WAY off the bottom of the growth charts. Hooray for Instant Breakfast, PB & J, and three years of freedom from milk and soy intolerances! Who knows, he may just exceed the weight limit on his car seat by the time he starts college.

Well ...

That plan to come up for air? Not happening just yet. During the past three weekdays, we've made four visits to the doctor, five trips to the pharmacy, and missed half a day of kindergarten, two days of preschool, and cancelled one college class. The good news? We have to be turning a corner soon. I hope.

Coming Up for Air

It's been an unusually rough start to the semester. Although Bill is on sabbatical, he's been putting in long hours plugging away (successfully!) on a statistical program (and taking on more than his fair share of sick-child care duties). Meanwhile, I've been trying to balance my regular teaching duties with department chair responsibilities, a looming manuscript deadline, and my work on the college's faculty evaluation committee (which is infamously time-consuming). I have hopes that next week will bring just a bit more time to come up for air.

In the meantime, we've been terribly neglectful of the blog. Better than terribly neglectful of the kids, I suppose. So, without further ado ('cause I have to get back to a pile of grading), the past five-ish weeks in pictures ...
